Giuseppe D’Innella is an Italian artist living in Wimbledon. 

A few years ago, during the winter months in his studio, a new type of work emerged, in addition to his Southern Italian hot-coloured landscapes.

It was, initially, a natural evolution based on abstracted shapes deriving from his landscapes. Later on, the daily routine of the studio allowed a slow and meticulous process of putting layer upon layer of washes and glazes on the canvas, generally of oil paint, sometimes mixed with other earth materials or a variety of media which react together, presenting, day by day, an organic and natural evolution.

Such a process of painstaking layering of pigment, followed by the scraping of most of it and successive rebuilding of new strata of paint, results in a rusty surface with varied levels of texture, or fields of luminous colours where the different tones create effects of inner glows and floating shapes.

Three of these recent works have been reproduced in Giclée prints by The Image Group, Miami, USA.

Another development of this approach is his recent oil on perspex work.  The smooth surface of the perspex triggered the idea of painting on the back of the material creating luminous effects and original plays of shapes and colours.
